I've been involved with Stand for Children Illinois for a while now. Advocating for my kids - and the kids of my neighbors in Back of the Yards - has been a very rewarding experience. My work with Stand allows me to engage with parents from all over Chicago and Illinois.
One of the best opportunities that I've had through Stand came a few weeks ago when I was part of the group of parents that interviewed the mayoral candidates seeking Stand's endorsement. The Stand PAC supports candidates who are education champions. The interview is part of the endorsement process, and parents play a leading role.
At the end of that process, we decided unanimously that the best candidate to support was Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
During the interviews, we - the parent members of Stand - asked the questions of the Mayor. We covered issues from school closings to early education, from college access to safety. Question after question, the Mayor responded thoughtfully and with deep knowledge of the issues facing education in Chicago.
I am proud to support Mayor Emanuel for another term. As Mayor, he has made the difficult decisions necessary to improve our public schools. All kids have access to full-day kindergarten, and his initiative to pay for community college for CPS high school graduates with a B average is impressive. The CPS graduation rate last year reached a record high. More than 80 percent of last year's high school freshmen are on track to graduate. We're making progress, but we have more work to do.
That's why Mayor Rahm Emanuel is the education champion we should support in the February 24 election.
