Celebrate the Next Crop of Education Leaders
Parents are the best advocates for their kids’ education, and last night Stand University for Parents (Stand UP) celebrated the latest group of education advocates at the LEARN campus in North Chicago. The group of 43 parents (a record number of parents for one class) became the newest Stand UP graduates, signaling their commitment to improving public education for all kids in their communities.
Stand UP is a research-based, eight-week family engagement course for parents of elementary school children. Stand UP’s eight academic classes are focused on actionable steps parents can take immediately to get involved in their children’s academics and to ensure their children are on track to college.
Stand UP started as a pilot program in Chicago in 2012, and in just the first year we graduated 250 parents from CPS schools. Stand UP graduate parents feel confident as they take informed and active roles in their children’s education today. Since its start, Stand for Children has been asked to host a Stand UP course in several schools and continues to expand with the help of strong community and school support.
We teach, practice, and revisit a few key topics, including: how to build relationships with your child's school, understanding and acting on student data and grades, and specific strategies to help students learn at home.
