Parents Join Together at Welcoming School+Share
The Dulles Parent Celebration which occurred last night at Dulles School of Excellence was an absolute blast to attend as the energy in the room was off the charts!
The parents, many of them Stand for Children members, and administrators of Dulles put together this event as a way to welcome incoming parents and students from Betsy Ross Elementary which is one of the schools slated to close this summer.
Approximately 40 parents were there along with Principal Thurman of Dulles, Alderman Cochran of the 20th Ward, and representatives from the CPS Safety team. Parents were able to meet one another and their new principal. There was also an opportunity for parents to speak with the safety team and voice any concerns they had about the safe passage plan for the neighborhood as well as offering up known "hot spots" that they felt needed special attention.
It was great to see families from both schools working together and enjoying one another's company, but what was most refreshing was seeing all the parents interacting in a way that is so opposite of all the vitriol I continue to hear about the school closure process. Hopefully other CPS schools will jump on this bandwagon and host incoming parent meet and greets this summer as it seems like a great proactive way to begin the transition and add a positive note to what has been such a difficult process for all of us.
Here are a few pictures of the event:
