Every Child Reads
Stand believes that Illinois can be a state where every child reads if we stand together to improve early literacy outcomes.
Every Child Reads is Stand’s family literacy program that combats summer slide by helping inspire children to develop a love of reading and increasing parent engagement. Every Child Reads has two important components.
First, we make it easy for students to select “right-fit” books that interest them. During the program, ECR students receive complimentary e-tablets which use an adaptive literacy platform called myON and are loaded with thousands of books. Thanks to a mighty team of volunteers, students also receive print books to take home. We assess reading growth and track the number of minutes and books read.
Second, we engage parents to support their children’s reading. Parents receive personalized text message tips, and families participate in our community literacy events.
Our partner schools and families hail from Chicago neighborhoods like South Shore, Washington Park, Woodlawn, Bronzeville, and West Town. They’re also standing up for children by participating in Stand as One and as active education advocates.
