Dovie Shelby is a lifelong resident of Illinois. She grew up on the East Side of Joliet where her parents stressed the importance of a good education. She earned an Associate of Science in Business Administration from Joliet Junior College, a Bachelor of Science in English at Illinois State University, and a Master of Arts in Communications and Training from Governors State University. While attending college, she worked as substitute teacher for District 86 and as an adjunct for several junior colleges. She has been a volunteer for the Junior Achievement and LaSalle Bank reading program with Tilton Elementary in Chicago. Education is very important to Dovie. Her main objective for joining the Stand for Children Illinois is college readiness for students. She believes too many students spend their first year in remedial coursework and do not earn college credits for those classes. She wants to promote a positive learning environment for the students of Illinois that will transcend to legislative changes within the education system as well as work with community organizations to improve opportunities for high school students.
