Early Literacy: Our Why
Stand Colorado has been deeply invested in early literacy for over a decade. The ability to read and write is the most foundational skill that students must possess to be successful throughout school and life. Students who cannot read proficiently by the end of third grade struggle to catch up and are 4 times more likely to drop out before earning a diploma.
Over half of Colorado third graders are not reading on grade level. The number of third grade students of color not reading on grade level is even more troubling. This is why one of our most urgent priorities is to ensure that every single student in Colorado has access to the education and resources needed to be successful readers and writers now.
- We fight for policy to support educators because prepared and supported educators can help every student learn to read.
- We fight for scientifically backed approaches to teaching students to read to be utilized in every Colorado classroom.
- We fight for adequate funding for implementation of early literacy policies.
- We support families with tools and resources to partner with teachers and promote early literacy at home.
