Proposition EE which will provide desperately needed funding for public schools and ensures universal, free preschool for all Colorado kids by raising taxes on cigarettes (slowly increasing from 84 cents in 2020 to $2.64 in 2027) was approved by Colorado voters. This proposition also closes the vaping tax loophole, slowly increasing taxes in line with other tobacco products (62%) by 2027. Raising taxes on tobacco and vape products helps people – particularly teens – quit using and discourages them from ever starting. Krista Spurgin, Stand for Children Executive Director released the following statement in response to Proposition EE passing.
“What an amazing victory for Colorado kids! We are thrilled that voters invested in our future and ensuring children in Colorado start strong with a solid foundation in their education. We have consistently heard from parents about the importance of early education. In addition to providing free, universal pre-k for all four year olds, we also voted to invest critical funding in Colorado’s schools who need it so much right now. Thank you to our tremendous volunteers who helped us tell voters about why they should support Proposition EE.”
Stand provided both financial support to the campaign and worked to increase awareness of Proposition EE. Our team and 48 volunteers sent over 2,115 postcards to voters and 192,325 text messages to voters.
