This Colorado Gives Day I hope you will consider supporting Stand for Children's Parent Advocacy Fellowship, which gives parents and community members the opportunity to become effective advocates for equity in our schools and community. Learn more about the Fellowship here.
I applied for the Fellowship because I was tired of sitting on the sidelines and complaining about the educational decisions being made for our kids and families. Even during my time inside education – first as a teacher and then as a leader – I felt like there had to be more that I could be doing to inform and impact the policy work being done around education.
In joining the Stand Parent Advocacy Fellowship, I am enthralled by the idea of building a team of change-agents from the greater community. Hearing from other parents and stakeholders in our children’s education is motivating. It roots me in the truth that we all are just seeking better ways and opportunities for our children that are equitable and keep our humanity front and center. Our stories, and histories, impact our present and have the tremendous power to shape the future.
Although I’m only a few short months in, I already feel I’ve grown considerably. Perhaps the most valuable experience I’ve had so far is speaking at the DPS Board meeting about what we’re looking for in our next superintendent. Learning how to frame and then speak your truth for an audience like that is a skill that I will continue to leverage to fight the good fight for our kids!
