Denver, CO - Stand for Children Colorado Executive Director, Krista Spurgin issued the following statement today after Denver Public Schools (DPS) announced that Dr. Alex Marrero has been selected as the next Superintendent.
“Congratulations to Dr. Marrero for being named next superintendent of DPS. Many of the parents we work with engaged throughout the search process and watched and even participated in the finalist interviews. These parents were impressed with Dr. Marrero’s specific answers and clear plans. Parents also appreciated that he was bilingual and felt that he understood the immigrant experience.
Now with a new superintendent in place, we call on the DPS Board of Directors to immediately begin outlining a vision and strategic plan focused on how they will ensure student success as well as student well-being and particularly how the district intends to support historically underserved students, particularly Black, Latinx and Indigenous students. We will remain focused on ensuring decisions are community-centered and equity-focused, that improving early literacy is a top priority, and that there are clear plans to ensure that every student has access to an excellent education.”
