Did you know that students who read culturally relevant books read more and have better comprehension (Colorín Colorado)?

A book that is culturally relevant has characters, settings, problems, and stories that are familiar to the everyday and real life of the reader. Reading and seeing books that reflect the life of your family can have positive impacts on a love of reading.

The next time you choose books with your child, think about looking for stories that are more relatable to your child. Our handout has questions you can ask your child when considering a book such as “Are the characters in the story like you and your family?” or “Do the characters in the story talk like you and your family do?” This resource also includes several booklists to help you get started on your search!
