Tomorrow is Read Across America Day! The theme this year is “celebrating a nation of diverse readers.” As you celebrate by reading a book with your child, we hope that you’ll consider picking one of the many stories out there with diverse characters.

Studies have shown that kids read more when they are given books with stories and characters that connect to their own lives. Even if there isn’t a direct connection with the book, reading about different cultures and experiences can widen the imagination and perspective of your child.

We wrote a blog about finding culturally relevant books here. We also put together a list of resources for families who speak Spanish here.

Regardless of the topic of the book, we know that you want to maximize the amount of learning and fun that happens while you read with your child. Check out our literacy cubes for an entertaining way to ask questions that check for understanding and critical thinking. You can also read through some of our suggestions for making the most out of your reading time.

And, of course, we encourage you to read with your child not just tomorrow- on Read Across America Day, but whenever you can! For more at-home literacy tips, check out Read Now Colorado. Happy reading!
