Stand has endorsed three candidates running for Denver Public Schools Board of Education. Over the next week we will be sharing more about these three candidates and why they were named education champions by our parent-led endorsement commitee. You can read more about the roles and responsibilities of DPS board members here and here.  Up next is Dr Carrie Olson who is the current School Board President and is running for reelection in District 3.

About Carrie:

Dr. Carrie Olson is a lifelong educator and the parent of a Denver Public Schools graduate. Dr. Olson received her B.A. in Elementary Education and Spanish from Wartburg College. She received her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Language, Literacy, and Culture from the University of Colorado at Denver. She also received her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from the University of Denver. In addition, she holds a Colorado Professional Master Teacher License and is a National Board Certified Teacher (Middle Childhood Generalist). From 2004 – 2014, Dr. Olson held the position of Executive Director for the Kepner Educational Excellence Program, a supporting nonprofit of Kepner Middle School. Currently, she’s an independent consultant for the USHMM and Educators for International Human Rights. In addition, she’s an adjunct professor at the University of Denver in the Teacher Education Program.

In her own words:

"As a DPS teacher for more than three decades, a parent of a K-12 DPS graduate, and now President of the DPS Board, I know that the most important factor in successful outcomes for our students is what happens in the classroom.  I am running again to bring my experience not just in our classrooms and in our schools but also my experience on the Board to this next era of DPS.  In the midst of our transition out of the pandemic and with a new superintendent, DPS needs a board director with an unparalleled commitment to the students who is relentless in her dedication to DPS.”

What Parents Say about Carrie:

“I love Carrie because she always welcomes community input and she takes the time to meet people where they are at,” said Natalie Perez, DPS Parent.
