It's hard to believe that 2018 is almost over! Looking back, I am so proud of the all the work that our team has accomplished in the past year. I wanted to share a few of my favorite stories with you in celebration of the achievements and in anticipation of what we have for 2019!
After budget cuts necessitated a closure of the school library in 2015, Stand Parent Leader, Jeannie Nelson, stepped up to make sure that Schmitt's kids had easy access to books.
Stand parents and educators testified in support of READ Act expansion in front of the House Education Committee in April. They showed great poise and confidence as they spoke about their experiences and fielded questions from their elected officials. The bill later passed and was signed by the Governor in May.
In June, we kicked off the summer with a family-friendly event at Harvey Park!
After hearing that Denver Public Schools was hiring a new superintendent, Stand parents jumped at the opportunity to provide community input during the hiring process. In late August a group of parents testified in front of the school board, citing equity and support for teachers as top priorities.
During election season, District 2 school board member, Angela Cobián, urged Denver voters to support Initiative 300: Prosperity Denver. Prosperity Denver, which passed in November, creates a scholarship fund for low-income students to continue their learning after high school graduation.
Thanks to our canvassing team (16,000+ doors knocked!) and the support of our members, 100% of our parent-endorsed Education Champions won their races.
We ended the year by hosting a summit for our members. We talked education funding, practiced advocacy skills, and planned a movement for fully-funded full-day Kindergarten in Colorado!
Thank you to our parents and supporters for helping us have another successful year. We can't wait to start working with you all again in 2019!
