Stand for Children Colorado is honored to be partnering with A + Colorado to bring Community Conversations about education to northwest Denver. These events are an opportunity for community members to learn about how Denver Public Schools is tackling its biggest issues and to discuss opportunities for advocacy with their neighbors.
We kicked off the conversation series by examining the high points of A+’ s “Start with the Facts” report. Participants analyzed the changing demographics of Denver’s student population; the persistent gap in achievement between white students and students of color and between wealthy students and students eligible for free & reduced-price lunch.; and shifting graduation and matriculation rates.
Our second conversation revolved around DPS’ journey in supporting struggling schools. We walked through the history of district-run interventions, school closures and restarts, and accountability measures that have defined the past ten years in DPS.
Finally, on May 14th, we will be hosting our third Community Conversation: School Choice. We will discuss unified enrollment and its impact on the Denver community. You are invited to take part in this important meeting and join the conversation!
