Yesterday, in his first State of the State address, Governor Jared Polis said, "our top priority this session is empowering every single Colorado community to offer free, full-day kindergarten in our great state of Colorado."

Stand for Children parent member, Leah Jackson explained her support for this proposal on the news, "we need to start planting these seeds now and allowing them to develop who they are and build them, so they can be successful learners and life-long learners."

Studies have shown that full-day kindergarten leads to many positive outcomes for kids - like higher reading and math achievement, better social skills, and earlier identification of learning challenges. State funding currently pays for a half-day of kindergarten for all students, so parents in many Colorado districts must pay tuition for their child to attend full-day kindergarten.

Polis said he will include funding for the proposal in his budget. Are you interested in joining the effort working on fully funded full-day kindergarten? Consider applying to become a Stand for Children Advocacy Fellow!
