As part of our deep commitment to improving early literacy in Colorado, we are excited to announce that we are offering 20 scholarships for Colorado educators to attend the Reading League’s introductory "Knowledge Block" An Introduction to The Science of Reading online this month. The Reading League is a widely respected organization that bridges the gap between research and classroom practice to improve literacy outcomes for students.

The Science of Reading embodies over 40 years of research from multiple fields of study that shines a light on key fundamental principles of reading instruction. The Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act, passed in 2012 and updated twice in the last few years, is grounded in this comprehensive body of research that identifies the most effective ways to teach reading and it also targets state funding to identify and support those students that need it the most. Yet, we often hear from educators that they do not feel like they have been prepared to use these science backed reading approaches in their classroom.  This introductory session will cover what the evidence says, why this is so important for our practice, and will set the stage for future Knowledge Blocks addressing how this translates into classroom practice. This is an exciting time to engage with the science; with evidence-aligned instruction, we really can deliver on the promise of literacy for virtually all students.
