Each year, Stand for Children hosts a lobby day for parents and educators to tour the Capitol, attend legislative hearings, and meet with state lawmakers. Our hope is that by demystifying the legislative process, parents will understand the value of their voices, and the importance of advocating for their children at the state-level. We want parents to know that legislators were hired by the people, and the work they accomplish at the Capitol should be in their best interests. In order for lawmakers to understand the varying perspectives of people across Colorado, it is incredibly important for them to hear from people who are directly impacted by legislation.
Stand for Children’s lobby day included 29 parents and educators, representing four different schools in Denver. They were able to meet with 7 legislators, including the Chairs from the Senate and House Education Committees, and discuss the importance of a quality education for all students. Many parents have been actively involved with Stand for several years and voiced their support for high academic standards and aligned assessments. It was thrilling to see parents empowered to advocate for their children at the Capitol.
In the future, we hope that parents feel confident to walk into the Capitol and have a better understanding what happens under the Gold Dome. It is our right to participate in the legislative process and express how bills will positively or negatively impact our lives. We are grateful for all the Stand parents and educators who participated in this year’s lobby day. Thanks to their support, we know that students across the state will benefit from education policies that promote high-quality schools!
