Stand for Children Colorado issued the following statement today from interim Executive Director Krista Spurgin in response to Commissioner of Education Robert Hammond’s announcement that he will retire July 1, 2015.

“Commissioner Hammond has been a strong leader and partner during the 7 years he has been at the Colorado Department of Education. During his tenure, Colorado has tackled some of the most important work we have done to improve education for all Colorado students. We applaud his leadership in developing and implementing higher standards for all students and working for new and smarter tests that help us ensure students are reaching those standards. His work to create an evaluation system that provides feedback to educators so they can grow, which helps ensure that every student has an excellent teacher, will be a lasting legacy. There is so much at stake as we move forward with this work and the new commissioner will have big shoes to fill. We encourage the State Board of Education to be thoughtful in their search and hope they will create a transparent and credible process as they search for Commissioner Hammond's successor."
