Teachers and Leaders Making the Grade

In 2010, Stand Colorado helped pass the Great Teachers and Leaders Law (Senate Bill 191), but we didn’t stop there. We’ve closely monitored the implementation of the law to ensure that it would truly help Colorado’s teachers and principals reach their full professional potential.

On February 15, Governor Hickenlooper signed HB 1001 into law. This bill, which outlines the rules for how teachers and principals will be evaluated, closes one of the final chapters in the implementation of the Great Teachers and Leaders Law. We're proud to say that this law received near unanimous bipartisan support, passing with 99 out of 100 votes. This came after nearly two years of work by stakeholders, including advocacy groups, teacher's unions, the Colorado Department of Education, parents, educators, and lawmakers. Together, we created a set of rules that outline the way that teacher and principal evaluations will happen in our state and set model systems for districts to use or improve upon.

The passage of HB 1001 means that Colorado continues to lead the country in how we approach education reform. Stand will continue to monitor the progress of this law through the pilot phase, which is currently scheduled to begin in fall 2012.
