On February 27, we had an amazing event with over 200 parents at the State Capitol! It was a fun and educational experience. After an informative day of workshops, tours, and “meet and greets” with legislators, parents told us they were energized by this experience. In fact, they even asked us to make sure we will do it again next year!

We started out the day with lawmakers visiting with and speaking to the group, including: Senator Bowie, Senator Navarette, Senator Rios, Representative Udall, Representative Blanc, Representative Chavez, Representative Cook, Representative Liberman, and Representative Sierra.

Then, our keynote speaker was Superintendent of Public Instruction, Kathy Hoffman. She was introduced by her Chief of Staff, a former school principal and public school teacher, Claudio Coria.

Superintendent Hoffman talked about the role of the department and how they are working to modify laws affecting English Language learners. After her remarks, Superintendent Hoffman answered questions from our parents about special education funding, various commissions, and how parents can get more information.

Next, parents went on a comprehensive tour of the Arizona State Capitol, where they got to learn more about the history of our state and also the capitol grounds.

After the tour, parents attended a workshop led by our Government Affairs Director, Stacey Morely, who explained how a bill becomes a law and how to find our lawmakers.

In the end, this was a great educational event. We’d like to thank Snooze Eatery, Bashas, Niagara Bottling Co., Raising Cane’s, and Dutch Bros for helping make this event possible.
