PHOENIX, AZ – Stand for Children Arizona Executive Director Rebecca Gau issued the following statement in response to Governor Doug Ducey’s State of the State address:

“We are glad to see a continued dialogue about education at the state capitol. During the last election and legislative session, Arizonans sent a message loud and clear: it is time to invest more in our students and support our teachers.”

“This session, lawmakers need to increase resources to raise student achievement. However, any additional school funding must also show a return on investment and be resistant to economic downturns. One-time fixes and budget gimmicks aren't going to work. The market is also demanding we improve the pay and working conditions of teachers. If we don’t respond adequately, our academic stagnation will turn into an outright free fall.”

“Finally, this year we must pass common-sense ELL legislation to give local districts the flexibility to adopt their own high-quality programs to help English Language Learners in our schools, enabling to them to learn English more quickly. We look forward to and are willing to work with anyone who will make our public schools a priority and put kids before partisan politics.”
