I sat down with the newewst member of the Stand Arizona team to learn a little bit more about her.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Georgina Monsalvo, and I’m excited to be the new Statewide Organizing Director where I’ll be working with parents and community members across Arizona. For me, this work is personal. I grew up in Douglas, Arizona, a small rural town on the US-Mexico border, where I saw firsthand the disparities within the public school system. And if that wasn’t enough, I quickly found out I wasn’t ready for college when I almost flunked out of my first year because of the rigorous work college demanded. It took me a while to catch up to my peers, and to this day, I still experience the repercussions of the disadvantages I had. Why do you stand for children?

Now, as a mother of a 9-year-old son, I want him to attend the best school possible — one that will prepare him for college.

My only hope is that the quality of his education doesn’t keep depending on where he lives. Our schools are underfunded with overcrowded classrooms and underpaid teachers. Our teachers and students deserve the best, so we need to keep advocating for them.

How can folks get involved?

Right now, if you’re interested in getting plugged in and doing more about the state of education in Arizona, you can become a member. It’s an easy process but one that I believe will have a lasting impact on the future of our students.

Final thoughts?

I’m super excited to be part of an amazing organization that’s doing great work for kids across Arizona. I believe that in the next couple of months, we are going to do amazing things. We hope you’ll be a part of what’s happening.
