Stand for Children Arizona Endorses Three Candidates for Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board

Trio has incredible experience and strong determination to keep MCCCD thriving

PHOENIX (September 20) - Stand for Children Arizona is proud to issue its 2016 endorsements for the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board.  These candidates represent decades of experience in education, governance and business.  After a rigorous vetting process, these three candidates have proven to Stand for Children Arizona that they have the best ideas to not only keep the MCCCD a vital pathway for future student success, but they also recognize its value to the community as a whole.

The candidates who earned our endorsement are:  Dennis Kavanaugh  in District One; Dana Saar  in District Two and Linda Thor  in the At-Large District.

“Stand for Children Arizona understands that while the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board race may not get a lot of headlines, the colleges it oversees provide an essential resource to thousands of students from Arizona and beyond.  And at a time when the very existence of community colleges is under threat by those who don’t seem to understand their importance to the broader community, it is more vital than ever to pick candidates who will hold the line, and make the system even stronger.  We believe our endorsed candidates are more than qualified to do just that,” said Rebecca Gau, Stand for Children Arizona Executive Director.

During FY2013-2014, MCCCD and its students added $7.3 billion in income to the Maricopa County economy. (MCCCD 2015 study conducted by emsi)

In determining these endorsements, a committee comprised of Stand for Children parent leaders evaluated candidates on an education-specific questionnaire, as well as incumbents’ voting records, and the candidates’ overall alignment with Stand for Children core objectives.
