The students will show how their grassroots tutoring program is a model not only in underserved communities, but one that could help prepare children all over the state.

PHOENIX (March 23) – At 9 a.m. Thursday morning, the Principal Claudio Coria and two of his students from Alhambra High School will testify before the Senate Education Committee about how a tutoring program, started by parents and funded by Stand for Children, is doing wonders for children in need of some extra help.

The idea for the program came from two mothers, Lucila Maldonado and Norma Chavez, who are Stand-trained leaders. They approached Stand for Children with a desire to provide the young children, many of whom didn’t speak English, with a chance not only to get caught up to grade-level work, but also to excel. Stand provided the logistics and the funding, and now, the tutoring program is a model for all school districts.

“I was a bit hesitant at first since I’ve never really worked with children, but now, I love every moment. I look forward to helping these young students learn and grow, said Anthony Orduno, an Alhambra H.S. Junior who will testify about his experience on Thursday.

Maldonado and Chavez will be in the audience, as well as representatives from Stand for Children, who will testify about their efforts to expand this program in the other districts they serve and organize.”

“When you empower parents with the tools they need, it is amazing to see how hard they will work to help not only their own children, but all of the students in their community. Stand for Children is so proud that we were able to take part in this successful program,” said Rebecca Gau, Stand for Children Executive Director.

The testimony will take place in Senate Room #1 at 9 a.m. Pictures of the tutoring program and video of the testimony is available upon request.
