Parents across Arizona now have a new tool when helping their elementary school students with math and English homework. The website was created by Stand for Children Arizona to assist parents with understanding Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards.

In 2010, Arizona adopted new, more rigorous academic standards to help prepare students for future success. Now that public schools across the state have aligned their teaching with these standards, many parents have found themselves struggling to understand the new approach.

As an organization that works with parents every day in Arizona schools, Stand understands that it is challenging for parents who were taught math and English in a different way to help their children understand approach concepts in a new way.

However, while the approach is new, it is not bad. In fact, a majority of Arizona teachers support it. The goal of these standards is to challenge our students to do more with what they learn. It’s about teaching kids the “why” and not just the “how.”

“Arizona parents help their children with a lot of things, but sometimes parents need help, too,” stated Rebecca Gau, Executive Director for Stand for Children Arizona. “At Stand, we know that parents may also need some help with the how. We hope this site does just that and while it will not answer every question a parent might have, we hope it answers a few and helps ease some of the frustration that comes along with learning new things.”
