2016 Candidate Endorsements: Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board
Stand for Children Arizona does not take the endorsement of political candidates lightly. In fact, our influence in elections is often the factor that most definitively differentiates us from other education advocacy groups.
We start with a detailed and well-crafted survey that we send out to all candidates. It asks them a series of questions about their thoughts on education policy and priorities.
The candidates running for Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board were not only asked about their top educational priorities, but also how they plan to work with county manufacturers and other businesses to have better programs to train the workers of today and tomorrow. Many of the candidates came into our offices to speak to our parents directly. The list of questions was long, the interview extensive, but we feel our process is the best way for our parents to make an informed choice for the communities we serve.
Two out of every three jobs in Arizona will require additional training beyond a high school diploma by 2020. (Source: 2014 Georgetown University, Center on Education and the Workforce, June 2013). We know that the MCCCD is vital in not only providing accessible and quality education, but its students and employees give back billions of dollars in income to the county economy, $7.3 Billion in 2013-2014. (MCCCD study, 2015, conducted by emsi). There is also a movement currently within the county to weaken the effectiveness of community colleges. Stand for Children Arizona is determined not to let that happen.
Once the surveys are filled out and the interviews are complete, our trained and organized parents review them. Once the surveys are scored, both by our parents and by hand-picked education professionals, we prepare our list of endorsements. We are proud to present them to the public.
